Nostalgia Drag Racing at the Auto Club Dragway

The Antique Nationals is the original nostalgia drag race and is one of the largest single-day drag racing events for antique cars in the country. The 44th edition was hosted by the Forever Four Cylinder Club and was held at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California on June 29. It was clear, sunny and hot.

To compete, vehicles had to be older than 1954, while the show and shine cars were cut off at 1974. With more than 180 drag race cars in 11 different classes, there was plenty of variety and action on the track. Prior to racing, cars had to pass tech inspection, which required seat belts and helmets in all vehicles. Open cars running 13.99 or quicker had to have an NHRA-approved roll bar and arm restraints.

Many of the 400-plus vehicles in attendance are only shown at this annual event. The pits were packed, and the gathering included Ford four-bangers, flatheads and inline engines. The unique brands onhand were Studebakers, Hudsons, Crosleys, Nashes and a nice mix of Ford model Ts, As and Bs. While competitive, the mood was still laidback, because this event is about more than simply winning. The emphasis is on having a good time and visiting with fellow enthusiasts. When the races are over, it’s all about the community.
