2. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve offering
Guests of Turtle Inn in Belize can experience the world’s only Jaguar preserve, a superb place for birding, hiking and possible wildlife sightings. The 128,000 acre wildlife sanctuary has well marked hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging and is a jaguar hotspot which also provides habitat to Howler Monkeys, Agouti, Brocket Deer and Peccary. This Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve takes guests on a picnic lunch, a fun tubing down the river, and a dip to cool off under refreshing waterfalls.
3. Monkey River Wildlife Adventure
Turtle Inn offers guests the opportunity to explore Monkey River by boat observing howler monkeys, coastal and wetland birds, iguanas, crocodiles and many other species of wildlife. With an experienced nature guide at the helm guests will slowly weave through the maze of mangrove islands that hug the shoreline. Guests may even see the endangered Manatee as they head south to Monkey River. As the boat moves slowly upriver the group will birdwatch and spot turtles, crocodiles and iguanas, followed by a hike through huge stands of bamboo and along jungle trails to view noisy troops of howler monkeys. This is a remarkable and exciting wildlife trip. On the way downriver the boatman will stop in the tiny village of Monkey River for a lunch and an opportunity to purchase souvenirs. (This tour is not recommended between the months of November to May due to the rainy season).
4. Diving and Snorkeling Experiences at Turtle Inn
Scuba diving and snorkeling tours are conducted either at inner or outer reef and atoll locations, along the Belize Barrier Reef. For snorkeling, an upgrade to a Day at Coral Caye Private Island or Island Hopping is available. PADI Courses are available in one day and include all material, equipment, one ocean dive and a PADI Discover Scuba Card.
5. Guided Mountain Biking at Blancaneux Lodge
There’s no better way to explore the diverse ecosystems of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve than a bike tour. Guided bike trips will take guests on scenic routes and trails around the Reserve either for a half or full day experience. The Concierge will help guests match the trip to their ability.
6. Birding at Turtle Inn and Blancaneaux Lodge
Perfect for novice and professional birders alike, the bird watching experiences at Turtle Inn and Blancaneaux Lodge are not to be missed. As the sun rises at Blancaneaux Lodge, the forest is alive with the sound of exotic birdlife. Guests can take a short walk around the property’s gardens and trails, and let a guide point out the well camouflaged birds hiding in the nearby forest learning about the migrant species and the many secrets of feathered friends.
At Turtle Inn, the resort’s on-site ornithologist Melvin takes guests to enjoy the morning sun rising over the Caribbean Sea while strolling through the grounds of the resort. Of the country’s 590 recorded species, some of the most spectacular, and some of the rarest of species can be seen here versus elsewhere: the Lovely Cotinga, Ornate Hawk-Eagle and Rose-throated Tanager, as well as a host of colorful toucans, parrots and hummingbirds.
7. Fishing Experiences at Turtle Innfishing experiences are available for guests of Turtle Inn. The Trolling The Reef experience includes a tour and all fishing gear. Guests can also opt for either the Salt Water Fly Fishing at Placencia, a haven for even the most experienced fly fisherman, or Salt Water Deep Sea Fishing off the barrier reef of Belize. After cruising through the beautiful Cayes and private islands of the coastal area of the peninsula the group will reach the 3,000 foot drop off at the barrier reef. This day can be combined with lunch on a private island or catered on board.
