A Spectacle of Speed and Style

As the editor of Drive Magazine, attending the prestigious O’Reilly Auto Parts Grand National Roadster Show is always a highlight of the year. This year’s event, held at the Fairplex in Pomona, California, was no exception. The atmosphere crackled with excitement as enthusiasts gathered to witness the culmination of the 74th annual show.

The spotlight shone brightest on two exceptional vehicles: Beth Myers’ 1932 Ford Phaeton and David Rush’s 1959 Chevrolet Impala. Myers’ Phaeton, meticulously crafted by Roy Brizio Street Rods, claimed the coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award, a testament to its flawless design and unparalleled craftsmanship. The Phaeton’s sleek lines, deep black paint, and full-length flames paid homage to classic hot rods while boasting modern-day performance capabilities.

Myers’ victory was not without fierce competition. Eight other roadsters vied for the title, showcasing the best of the custom car world. The level of talent and dedication on display underscored the show’s reputation as the pinnacle of hot rodding excellence.

Equally deserving of accolades was David Rush’s 1959 Chevrolet Impala, recipient of the Al Slonaker Memorial Award. This prestigious honor recognized the Impala’s timeless style and impeccable execution, a fitting tribute to its owner’s passion and commitment to the automotive arts.

Beyond the thrill of victory, the Grand National Roadster Show offered enthusiasts a smorgasbord of automotive delights. From historic hot rods to cutting-edge custom builds, the event celebrated the rich tapestry of automotive culture. Highlights included Kevin Hart’s stunning 1969 GTO and 1959 Corvette, as well as the historic “Cop Shop Coupe” and the iconic Uncertain T hot rod.

The show’s diverse attractions catered to enthusiasts of all stripes. The Grand Daddy Drive-In featured a dazzling array of classic hot rods and modern customs, while the Hemmings.com Car Corral Drive-In provided a platform for owners to showcase and sell their collector cars.

Moreover, the show’s charitable endeavors underscored the automotive community’s commitment to giving back. The popular pinstriper auctions raised $56,000 for Teen Challenge of Southern California, supporting individuals and families affected by addiction.

As the curtains closed on another unforgettable Grand National Roadster Show, we reflected on the passion, creativity, and camaraderie that define the automotive world. From the roar of engines to the gleam of polished chrome, the event served as a testament to the enduring allure of hot rodding and custom car culture.
