Flowmaster Drag Racing Series Brings Out the Competition
The Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California opened its season with the National Muscle Car Association’s three-day event, bringing together more than 300 racers from all over the western region. Racers anxiously converged on the legendary drag strip in hopes of taking home a coveted Wally trophy. Competitors in 15 classes chased points toward a year-end prize and the world championship title.
The creative classes include big-time names like True Street, Mustang Madness, Open Comp, Nostalgia Street Car, Quick Street and Super Quick, Street Outlaw, True Ten 5 and Pro Mod. These are some of the best muscle car racers in the country, which obviously made for some heavy competition. The competition was no less fierce at the NMCA West’s six-race Fontana Bracket Series.
Early Saturday morning there was a light rain, but the track was ready for action by 9 a.m. Starter Donie Butts kept the action going until 6 in the evening. For road racing fans there was plenty to appreciate at the professionally constructed Hotchkis Autocross course, where anyone could race the clock for bragging rights for the fastest lap and a chance to take home various prizes.
Aside from racing, this event featured an awesome manufacturers’ midway where you could find great deals on the performance parts enthusiasts need for their own muscle cars or hot rods. Adding to the fun, a lot of muscle cars and street rods were handpicked by the NMCA West Country Exhibition staff to receive VIP parking and a chance to win some gear.
