AXC Engine Start Event 2015

The Alex Xydias Center for Automotive Arts is (AXC) in its 4th year of operation, and has surpassed all expectations. AXC is part of classes offered by The Learning Centers at Fairplex in Pomona, CA, and boasts a new beautifully maintained 7000sf shop, courtesy of the Robert E. Petersen Foundation, two full-time teachers, and four levels of automotive curriculum. What started as a dream of bringing more highly trained individuals into the automotive aftermarket is now a reality. AXC has graduated 30 students and is proud to say that every one of them was hired into the aftermarket before graduating. This is a huge step up for the car hobby. What was once a dubious subject, if you will, is now met with real enthusiasm and terrific anticipation!

On December 17th, Class 103 – 2014 hosted the 4th annual AXC Engine Start Event. This year the semester-long engine build experience was shared by two of the classes. It should be noted that they are not allowed to “test” their handiwork beforehand. While both classes were double checking for compression, spark and fuel, onlookers patiently waited with fingers crossed.

The first engine team did not disappoint, lighting the supercharged small block Chevy almost instantly. Meanwhile the second team fussed over wiring issues and it became apparent team one would have to assist. They did, and to the delight of all in attendance, the engine came to life, a sweet moment indeed! Praise to all involved, it was really a fun time.  The occasion has grown into an annual “competitive” event that I hope will continue for many years to come…fun stuff to watch!
