Connor Scalbom’s 2022 Toyota Tacoma

For Connor Scalbom, his 2022 Toyota Tacoma isn’t just a truck—it’s his ticket to adventure. Living in Boulder, Colorado, meant that he needed a rig that could handle everything from daily commutes to deep backcountry trails. Instead of going for a flashy, over-the-top build, Connor took a practical approach by focusing on upgrades that would improve capability without sacrificing reliability. The result? A well-balanced Tacoma that’s as comfortable on the road as it is off of it.

The heart of the build remains Toyota’s V6, but a few key upgrades help it breathe a little easier. An OTT tune sharpens throttle response, while a Borla Cat-Back Touring exhaust package provides more growl without being obnoxious. Out back, the factory E-Locker ensures traction when the trail gets tough.

The suspension system is where things got serious. A Dobinsons 2.5-inch lift gives the truck the clearance it needs, and upgraded Dobinsons shocks soak up rough terrain. Paired with 285/70R17 Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires and Black Rhino Outback wheels (-10 offset), the setup is dialed in for both comfort and control.

Armor and lighting play a crucial role in off-road confidence. Up front, a Rough Country Hybrid bumper provides the required protection on the trail. A Baja Designs roof rack-mounted light setup featuring eight linked pod lights makes cutting through the darkness a breeze.

Inside, the build stays true to its adventure roots. Plans for a rear seat delete are in the works, making room for better gear storage. The most unique feature? The hand-drawn mountain landscape on the camper side panel—a constantly evolving piece of art that captures the spirit of every trip.

Connor’s Tacoma isn’t just about building a capable truck—it’s about being part of the overlanding and off-road community. He’s taken it to Overland Expo West and Overland Expo PNW, where he has met like-minded enthusiasts, shared stories, and picked up new ideas for the next phase of his build. His advice to others looking to build their own adventure rig? “Start with what you have and work your way up. You don’t need the fanciest or most expensive gear—just get outside and enjoy the outdoors.”

Looking ahead, Connor has a few upgrades planned. A full off-road bumper and long-travel suspension setup are both on his radar. But for now, his Tacoma is doing exactly what he built it for—taking him to the places he loves with the gear he needs, all while sharing a few good stories along the way.
