MICHAEL ECKERSON January 16, 2023 All Feature Vehicles
As I have said before, Cruisin’ for a Cure is an event. What an event! Cruisin’ for a Cure is the world’s largest one-day charity car show with over 3,500 vehicles on display.
Certainly, that statement alone creates a strong reaction in most of us. Spending the day enjoying several thousand pristine and unique vehicles, strewn across the landscape of the OC Events Center is a pretty great way to spend a day.
Since the Cruisin’ for a Cure is the largest one-day charity car show, you have the chance to enjoy your day checking out amazing cars and trucks, and your entrance fee contributes to the charitable cause, benefitting prostate cancer research.
Most importantly while you are there, take time to participate in the on-site prostate cancer screening available for free. It is a simple, painless blood test.
A simple PSA test, while not the complete answer, will indicate if there is the possibility of a problem. It takes less than 10 minutes and you will receive your results in less than 30 days.
We tested a total of 888 men this year. The KSK Cancer Center of Irvine, performed 317 DRE’s (the digital rectal exams) of which 16 had suspicious lumps (5.05%) that would have not known otherwise, and 574 (64.64%) of the men did NOT have the digital exams, and 59 BPH (enlarged prostate) (18.61%) and a grand total of 888 PSA’s of which 178 were elevated over 2.5 (20.05%) and told to see their urologist.
We will begin testing again at 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. on September 26, 2020. As a result of opening up earlier this year, we screened even more men.
Over the past twenty years, over 10,000 men have been tested at the show, and hundreds of lives have been saved.
We want to save your lives by catching the warning signs of this deadly disease early with our free screening. Please consider doing both the PSA and DRE next year.
This year Cruisin’ For A Cure celebrated the 20th year of not only putting on the world’s largest one-day charity car show, but more importantly, adding to the list of survivors. Cruisin’ continues next year, saving more lives, making an event for all to enjoy and setting the standard for excitement, entertainment, family fun, early detection, and a significant charitable contribution.
We anticipate the contributions to exceed even last year’s amazing donation. Debbie Baker presented a check last year to the KSK Cancer Center Medici Foundation in the amount of $100K from Cruisin’ For A Cure.
For those of you that took advantage of the free screening this year, your test results will be mailed directly to you from the KSK Cancer Center in Irvine. By the time this publishes, you may have already received notice. We are hopeful your news is good. We look forward to seeing you back at CFAC next year.
We hope you made it this important and enjoyable event. Mark your calendar for September 26, 2020 when Cruisin’ for a Cure rolls back into the OC Events Center. Debbie and her whole team of volunteers, celebrities, bands, and vendors will be set up and ready to make a difference.
Cruisin’ for a Cure was started in 2000 by Debbie Baker whose husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Cruisin’ for a Cure is the world’s largest one-day charity car show with over 3,500 vehicles on display and over 200 vendors and exhibitors. They get to cruise through the OC Fair & Event Center for 1.5 miles and/or park and just display their vehicles.
Cruisin’ for a Cure is a registered non-profit California organization. The logistics, marketing, and organization of the show is all handled by volunteers dedicated to the cause of saving our men from prostate cancer. Unlike many other automotive fundraising events, none of the proceeds goes to a car club, promoter, or to administrative overhead.
Be assured that your participation in the event and any donations go directly to prostate cancer research to find a cure!
…dedicated to the cause of saving our men from prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the U.S.
The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland below the bladder that is a component of the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer ranks as the second most common cause of cancer death among men, and the American Cancer Society estimates there will be approximately 31,620 deaths in 2019 attributable to the cancer.
Risk factors for the development of prostate cancer include increasing age, African ancestry, and family history of the disease. It is a disease of older men with 97% of cases occurring in men aged 50-years or older. The highest rates of disease are found in African-American males. It is a slow-growing cancer and the prognosis is good with 5-year survival rates approaching 100%. Screening for prostate cancer is controversial and done with an annual prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE).
Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2019 are:
About 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer
About 31,620 deaths from prostate cancer
However, more than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer are still alive today. THAT statistic is why Cruisin’ for a Cure and all of the volunteers make the event happen each year.
Each year, a parade of first-responders opens the Cruisin’ for a Cure event.
For statistics related to survival, see the section on the American Cancer Society website on survival rates for prostate cancer. – www.cancer.org
We look forward to seeing you next year!
We will begin testing again from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. on September 26, 2020
There will be plenty of cars, celebrities, awards, food, fun and the opportunity for you to take advantage of the free PSA and DRE tests next year.
Debbie
