The Surf City weather couldn’t have been better for the 14th Annual Huntington Beachcruiser Meet. Saturday started with participants arriving at the sold-out event as early as 4:30 in the morning! And by 5:30 Main Street was full of 100 Beachcruisers! The Pier Plaza area played host to most of the Woodies, and the adjacent parking lot contained another 100 or so cruisers. On Sunday all of the Woodies were actually parked right on the pier.
The original idea for a Beachcruiser Meet came after the 20th Annual Wavecrest Woodie Show in 2000. Many fine ’50s, ’60s and ’70s era beach-style vehicles were relegated to side streets adjacent to the show due to the Woodies-only nature of the event. So everyone could enjoy a wider variety, the theme was set for an all-inclusive event that welcomed all types of beach-cruising vehicles, and Surf City has embraced the idea for 14 straight years.
This year the pier and downtown area were packed with spectators. Local stores and restaurants were filled with people enjoying the eclectic collection of cars on display. Brett Harrell and his High Energy Sound Machine provided great surf music all weekend. The weekend honors the golden age of surfing when kids hauled their boards, buddies and babes to Surf City.
