Having a name like Chad Shetsky has come with a lot of jokes and jabs but what isn’t a joking matter is the quality of building Chad can do. Throughout his childhood, Chad didn’t get a break from the kids making fun of his last name, so what did he do about it? Chad made them all remember his name for something else that would turn their heads.
Chad was on the lookout for a Chevy C10 and made arrangements to go see a ‘67 short wheel base truck many hours away. Once he got there, he quickly realized that he had been lied to when he noticed the quality of the truck. Dejected, Chad and his friend turned around and headed back home. On the drive back, he began looking online for something else in that area and found a listing for a 1967 Chevy C10 owned by an older gentleman and his son.
Still optimistic, Chad went to see the truck on the way home and it looked just perfect. The C10 had minimal rust, but that was expected for the year and model. Chad knew what his plans were and knew that he could correct any and all flaws the classic had.
Although the truck didn’t run, the problems were fairly minor and could be fixed later that night. Chad cleaned the carburetor and changed the spark plugs as soon as he got home, and it fired right up. By himself, Chad began the tear-down process in a two-car garage, shoving the cab to one side and the bed floor to another. The motor and transmission were set aside, and the interior was gutted for the complete overhaul.
Chad ordered the complete Porterbuilt suspension parts through Travis at AZ Pro Performance. During the six-week wait time for the delivery, he began to shave the body to where he wanted it, stake pockets, gas filler, mirrors, and firewall. Once everything was mocked up, it was sent to be powdercoated. When the suspension arrived, Chad tackled that by himself by adding the stock floor bodydrop and installing the complete air-ride system using the Porterbuilt Extreme drop member with Slam Specialties ‘bags and Firestone sleeves. Chad added a trailing arm setup with the Panhard bar and one-piece driveshaft. A 3/8-inch line was run throughout with SMC valves and silencers.
Willard and Troy Buff at Competition Automotive Machine were next on the truck, building a new motor from the block up. They ripped down the entire motor down to the bare block and checked all the measurements for clearance. There was a slight deadline on this because Chad’s fiancé Candice had plans for them to be driving away in this truck at their wedding venue. Chad and his good friend Chris Jozwiak installed the motor and transmission with the help of his brother-in-law Cody, with the guys staying up until 4am the night before the wedding.
The new C10 was used as a daily driver for the next eight months following his wedding. One day while driving, the transmission gave out and Chad had to pull it out completely. During this process, he decided to make the classic Chevy a show truck instead of a driver. He brought the truck to Justin Berry, a fellow Eksessiv truck club member, and the entire truck was reworked and prepped for a new paintjob. Justin and Chad decided on a rich Ruby Red that could easily be repaired if anything were to happen to it.
With the truck coming along, Chad decided to enlist Advanced Auto Trim in Houston to tackle the interior. Joe Kennedy installed a new bench seat wrapped in vinyl as well as new black carpeting and floor mats. MBC Fab from Tomball, Texas, added the powdercoating to the door panels. With just minor additions to be completed for the finishing touches, Chad brought the C10 to Chris’ house to finish tidying everything up for LST.
Overall Chad’s time and effort paid back tenfold with a truck he’s proud to drive, show, and just simply look at. To all the people who ever doubted Chad’s ability, he says, “Shet happens.”
My wife, Candice, for her love and support for pushing me to finish this truck even through the rough times. Chris Jozwiak for helping me with the build as well as Willard and Troy Buff with Competition Automotive Machine (CAM) in Spring, Texas. Joe Kennedy with Advanced Auto Trim in Houston and Justin Berry for all the time he put into the Chevy with the paint and body. A special thanks to my parents for putting up with me throughout these builds, and to all my Eksessiv family.
