Where the Turf Meets the Surf

The 14th Goodguys Del Mar Nationals presented by Meguiar’s began on a Friday at the scenic Del Mar Fairgrounds where “The Turf Meets the Surf.” The event ran through Sunday and featured pre-’72 rods, customs and classics. On Saturday, the early rain didn’t really affect the show, and in any event the morning finished warm and sunny, and Sunday couldn’t have been better, either.

After exiting the last building full of show-n-shine cars, there was a huge parking lot dedicated to every type of car imaginable. There were hot rods, muscle cars, coupes, roadsters, trucks, station wagons, Woodies, and vintage and classic cars of all descriptions. The area also offered a swap meet, cars-for sale area and nostalgia entertainment all day long.

You could also overload your senses with a heavy dose of nitro when the vintage dragsters came to life. Nitrothunderfest featured vintage Top Fuel dragsters cackling to life just a few feet from the fans!

On Sunday, hot rod designer Chip Foose signed autographs for fans and picked a few of his favorite cars on which to bestow the Chip Foose Design Awards. You could also watch or compete in the Goodguys Autocross racing competition.

Many vendors provided a wide variety of goods: hoists, auto parts, personalized license plates, engines, polishes, jewelry, art—even original gas pumps. And that was just the automotive-related items!

Larry Maddox brought his ’32 Ford, Blue Steel. It’s an AMBR contender from Hemet, CA.

M&M Special is a real steel ’27 Ford channeled roadster with a suicide front end powered by a 276-ci Ford flattie motor. It’s owned by Charles Matus of Sacramento, CA.
The 2014 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, Black Bowtie, is a ’35 Chevy Phaeton designed by Foose, built by Troy Trepanier and owned by Wes Rydell.

Every so often cars would leave their parking spaces and make a pass down the cruise route, past the Woodies pavilion, in front of the public. Everywhere you went there were friendly people willing talk about their cars, offer you a chair and make you feel right at home.

Fantastic cars, wonderful people, nice weather, and a show that never seems to end; what more could you ask for? That wraps up the 14th Goodguys Del Mar Show, the only Goodguys event at Del Mar this year.

Trick Truck definitely defines this awesome ’53 Ford pickup (orange truck, opposite page). Owned Bob from Lake Elsinore, CA, the notes say “Nothing uncut.”

Pete DeCamp of Encinitas, CA, brought his slightly altered ’58 VW station wagon.
The L.A. Roadsters Club had a nice spot staked out for itself.
