The Friends of Steve McQueen Car and Motorcycle Show has become one of Southern California’s finest automotive gatherings. Vehicle entries from many different eras and types of motorsports, making it a must-see show. 

This automotive gathering was held to raise funds for Boys Republic, a private, non-profit, nonsectarian community for at-risk boys and girls ages 13-17, where a young Steve McQueen spent time as a student in 1946.

Guided tours of the Boys Republic were going all day during the show. Friday, a commemorative dinner celebrated the 50th anniversary of the movie “Bullitt” and was held to raise funds for Boys Republic.

The theme of the car show is inspired by the life of legendary Steve McQueen.  He was called “The King of Cool”, whose “anti-hero” persona made him a top box-office draw of the 1960s and 1970s.  In 1968 the movie Bullitt was released starring Steve McQueen. In the movie, McQueen drove a 1968 Highland Green, Ford Mustang Fastback.

In 2008, Ford produced their “Bullitt” Mustang as a tribute to the movie. Many of them were on-hand. Ford sent a “pilot production” 2019 “Bullitt” Mustang for the fans to check out! There were many kinds of cars and motorcycles to see. The classic film, “On Any Sunday”, which McQueen financed, is one of the reasons why motorcycles are a big part of the show.

McQueen also owned a Meyers Manx “dune buggy”, and many were on display in the sand. He also had a passion for Porsches. The football field was filled with hot rods, muscle cars, street rods, Porsches, low riders, classics, and lots of “Bullitts”. In addition to the cars and motorcycles on display, many vendors filled the area around the field.

On the baseball field, along the first and third base lines, were vintage camp trailers with vintage tow cars. The infield was covered with air planes used in some of McQueen’s movies. The outfield was covered with more classics and lots of Ford Mustangs.

The exotic cars were displayed on the grassy, tree-covered area between the two fields. The BBQ line was so long because it was provided by the famous “Roscoe’s”. Hungry spectators could also choose from Chick-fil-A or The Habit.

One of the things that set this show apart from others are the sail plane rides!! Spectators could also go up in a hot air balloon or you may want something a little more thrilling, like a ride in a jet fighter. Really!!
