It just goes to prove that any event on the planet can be made better by adding CARS. In this case, last month was the Oxnard Insect Festival… which on any normal weekend, I would have avoided like the plague, but seeing as how several VW Clubs were to display… I was in.

There were some stunning examples of Kustom Bugs from both Airkooled Klassics and Wolfsburg’s Finest, plus a couple others, but one thing about these guys is they know how to bring the party. After cruising through the actual Festival, I managed to find only ONE actual bug. A tarantula who seemed completely bored with the tons of kids’ faces anticipating that it was about to leap on someone’s face and suck out their eyes… but she just sat there and snored. The rest were pinned in place, and that revealed that it should have been called the Oxnard Dead Bug Fest. Much better…

Anyway, the VDubs and Buses were out in force and they looked kool as always. But the camaraderie of these clubs far surpassed most and it showed in their love for the restored classics and the full-blown ridiculous. All are good and all are welcome because family is family. I love these guys. They inspire all of us to be better people, and that my friends… is what it means to love cars.

If you have to go to a show to tell people how much you spent and how much you’ll get when you flip it… then go hang out with the dead bugs, because no one cares. But if you’re there to tell the story of the finger you squashed, time you spent and your annoyed wife or husband who still loves you no matter what… they again, I’m in.

So tell your story and inspire others to tell theirs. The ones who die with the best stories told… have won.
