13th Annual Dr. George Car Show

I wish I could say that I was able to attend the 13th annual Dr. George Car Show, but due to arthroscopic surgery to my right knee, which also kept me from attending the Grand National Roadster Show and Barrett-Jackson, I was unhappily sidelined. With help from Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association (PSCA) President Ross McMullin, I’m able to put you in the driver’s seat.

To refresh your memory, the annual Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association Dr. George Car Show is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Sebastian George, who was a nationally prominent oncologist and co-founder of the Desert Cancer Foundation. Dr. George passed away following a tragic traffic accident in June 2002, and since the show’s 2003 inception honoring his memory, it’s raised more than $543,000, which equates to $4.18 million in cancer treatment services. Yes, that’s correct— unbelievable—congratulations to all!

The 2015 Indian Wells Tennis Garden event, spearheaded by PSCA President McMullin and Tim Smartt, the steering committee show chairman, drew 1,000-plus cars from surrounding areas and the greater Southwest to raise in excess of $55,000! The entire club works extremely hard on this event, and everyone involved should be extremely proud of their accomplishment. What’s really cool is the eclectic array of cars displayed on the greenest grass, especially during the driest season in SoCal in recent memory. Basically, if your ride is a clean representive of the car culture, then you’re in. As in years past, along with hot rods, late-models, bikes, exotics and muscle cars there was an inordinate amount of street semi-customs, really top of the line.

Most local car clubs were in attendance and in larger participation than memory serves. Chad McQueen was sighted taking in the show as well as Gary and Marilyn Meadors. In fact, if you’ve ever been to a SO-CAL Speed Shop open house, it’s the PSCA who handles the unnerving chore of parking all of the rods and customs that show up for the pre-Father’s Day bash. I’m eternally grateful to Ross and the PSCA crew for the time and energy they donate to the car culture throughout the year, season after season.
